Some complications that can arise from viruses are breathing difficulties, tonsilitis, pneumonia, febrile seizures and dehydration. Sometimes a bacterial infection can develop on top of a viral infection and antibiotics may be needed.
Your child may have symptoms similar to a virus, but they could be caused by something else. Other causes of viral-like symptoms include:
- Ear infections
- Whooping Cough
- Strep Throat
- Meningococcal Disease (progresses quickly and is a medical emergency)
These illnesses will usually have additional symptoms on top of viral symptoms, such as ear pain, pulling on ears, a barking cough, trouble/pain swallowing, nausea or vomiting, stiff neck, pale/blotchy skin.
See your GP or urgent care clinic if your child has symptoms related to other illnesses or is very unwell.
- If they have breathing difficulties, are difficult to wake or you suspect Meningococcal take them to the emergency department straight away.
*It is always better to be safe than sorry so if you are worried or unsure, go to the emergency department.
