Triggers, signs and symptoms
Triggers
The substances that can cause allergic reactions in children and adults are known as allergens and the most common ones are:
- House dust mites
- Pets
- Foods(most common are nuts, cow's milk, eggs, shellfish, sesame, soy)
- Pollen
- Insects (most common is bee stings)
- Moulds
- Some types of medicine
Although these are the common triggers, other things could cause allergic reactions in some people.
Signs and symptoms of mild to moderate allergic reactions
- Swelling of the lips, face and eyes
- Red, blotchy skin
- Hives or welts
- Tingling mouth
Symptoms of severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis)
- Difficulty with breathing and/or noisy breathing
- Wheeze or persistent cough
- Swelling of the tongue
- Swelling and/or tightness in the throat
- Difficulty talking or hoarse voice
- Persistent dizziness or collapse
- Becoming pale and floppy (infants/young children)
- Stomach pain and vomiting alone are signs of anaphylaxis after an insect stings
