Hand and Foot and Mouth Disease

Hand, foot and mouth disease is a viral infection caused by the Coxsackie virus. Most children with this illness will get a rash with spots or blisters on their hands and feet, along with mouth ulcers.

First Aid for Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease

Care at home after diagnosis. HFMD rarely causes further complications. Antibiotics do not work on viruses and are not given for HFMD. It will get better on its own. It is very contagious and spreads easily in childcare settings.

• If your child is in pain or is uncomfortable, give them pain relief, such as paracetamol or ibuprofen. Do not give aspirin.
• Give your child frequent sips of water to stop them becoming dehydrated.
• Leave blisters to dry naturally. Do not pierce or squeeze them.
