Measles

Measles is a virus that causes a distinctive rash. Measles is very contagious and can be serious. If you think your child has measles, see your GP. A doctor should visit your child at home, or, if you visit a medical clinic, tell the receptionist as soon as you arrive, to avoid spreading the infection to others.

First Aid for Measles

• encouraging plenty of rest
• offering them plenty to drink to avoid dehydration
• giving paracetamol or ibuprofen if they have a fever and are irritable

You should go back to see your GP or the emergency department if your child has measles and:

• they seem to be getting worse
• they begin vomiting and are unable to drink much
• they seem very tired or are more sleepy than usual
• they have any confusion or memory loss
• they have a seizure or signs of paralysis
