Causes of poisoning

There are many causes for poisoning. The most common product involved in poisoning cases is paracetamol. Here are some others:

  • Toxic fumes or gas
  • Toxic substances such as chemicals or alcohol
  • Medication and drugs
  • Swallowing items such as batteries
  • Plants
  • Bites and stings

Signs and symptoms of poisoning

Symptoms of poisoning can depend on the type of poison, how much is taken and how it enters the body. Signs and symptoms can include:

  • Confusion, drowsiness, delirium or falling unconscious
  • Burns to the skin, lips or throat
  • Irritation to eyes and skin
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Heart palpitations
  • Abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting or diarrhoea
  • Blurred vision
  • Headache
  • Signs of Intoxication
  • Seizures
  • Stroke
