First Aid for Meningococcal
Meningococcal disease is a serious disease infecting the lining of the brain and spinal cord. It can lead to inflammation of the brain (Meningitis) and blood poisoning (septicaemia).
Triggers, signs and symptoms can be similar to other illnesses and can progress quickly.
Start with DRSABCD
D - Danger
Assess the area to ensure its safe for yourself, others and the patient. Only proceed to help them if its safe.
R - Response
Check for a response. You can do this by asking their name and squeezing their shoulders.
- If they do respond: Make them comfortable and continue to follow the steps in this guide
- If they don't respond: Send for help immediately (call Triple Zero 000) and follow the DRSABCD Action Plan
First aid for meningococcal
Meningococcal is a medical emergency. If you think your child might have it, go to the nearest emergency department immediately. Getting treatment early can save their life and prevent serious long-term effects. If your child is sent home but isn’t getting better, go back to the nearest emergency department.
